Lunch with the President

Noon–1:50 p.m. Friday, April 17
Application deadline: March 20

Lunch with the President is a two-hour activity at each spring and fall national convention offering student journalists a chance to meet with JEA’s president for a press conference. The honor gives students an opportunity to practice journalism, report on the state of JEA and scholastic journalism in general, and share ideas or agenda items coming from their own student media programs to be heard by the president. The special event is a multi-way conversation and another way to provide meaningful experience practicing journalism while connecting with other students from media programs around the country.

Based on this application, JEA will select up to 10 students to meet with the president to discuss issues in scholastic journalism. During lunch in the JEA suite, participants will have the president’s attention for ideas and suggestions related to student and adviser needs in scholastic journalism. Students selected for Lunch with the President are encouraged to produce some kind of piece based on the interview for publication at home in their student media. JEA will promote the finished pieces on the organization’s website and social media accounts.

Selection: Students may apply individually or with one partner from their school, and the event will be set up like a press conference. JEA leaders will select 10 students to participate (solo or in pairs, but 10 total) based on their answers to two essay questions on the online application. Students will be notified by April 1.
